UK newspaper launches online casino
The Metro newspaper, a free daily newspaper that circulates widely throughout the UK, has launched an online casino. The casino is called ME casino and it’s a little different than your average online casino.
ME Casino has a decent selection of online slots, blackjack games, roulette, online poker, and scratch cards, as well as untraditional casino games like Bejeweled and Monopoly. In a unique way, the casino combines online gaming with the news. The toolbar at the top of the screen has sections for bingo, poker, an arcade and other online gambling games, but it also has sections for news, sports, music, crosswords and more.
The Metro’s online casino is powered by the GTech G2 software and is licensed in Gibraltar. While betting your money on your favorite games, all the headlines and stories you would usually find in the periodical are just a click away.
As the newspaper industry continues to collapse, periodicals are looking for innovative ways to raise money, since advertising and subscriptions are no longer paying the bills. I think this is a good idea. Maybe the New York Times should open up an online casino. Since they’re every bit the trashy tabloid that the Metro is (only without the nude spreads), it only makes sense. Maybe they can make an online slot where when you win, Paul Krugman is dunked in a tank or hit in the face with a pie. I know I would play that game. As long as they keep Maureen Dowd away from the strip poker table, we’ll all be fine. The only problem with the Times opening an online casino, though, is that it would be in conflict with their anti-capitalist principles.
Like the best online casinos, ME Casino offers welcome bonuses for new players, which in this case is a 100% match bonus on your first deposit. They also offer loyalty points and other things you would expect from any online casino.
I have not yet played any games at ME Casino, but if their games are as well-made as their news articles…well, let’s hope they’re actually better.

Best Friends Capture WSOP Bracelets in Back to Back Days
Following his first ever World Series of Poker win, poker pro Chris Bell said,
"Things definitely run in twos and threes. You hear about these guys who have never won bracelets and then all of a sudden they win two."
What he was referring to was the fact that up until very recently, he and best friend and fellow poker pro Gavin Smith had never had the good fortune of winning a World Series of Poker bracelet. And then, in just the blink of an eye, on back to back days, both captured titles and earned their places in poker history.
As was reported yesterday, over the weekend, PokerRoad radio’s own Gavin Smith captured the $2,500 Mixed Hold em event for a $268K. Just 24 hours later, it was Bell’s turn and he methodically picked apart a final table to win the $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha Hi-Lo Event. Perhaps even more astonishing about the win was that prior to this year’s series, Bell was flat broke. In fact, he only played the tournament because friend Erick Lindgren staked him. It turned out to be a sound investment for Lindgren indeed.
In fact, last year, it turns out that both players were completely at the end of their poker bankroll. Of their lack of funds, Bell said,
"That’s another thing [we] both had in common: We stayed broke together for the last year."
The very next day, Bell and Smith made the rounds on an episode of PokerRoad radio devoted solely to their accomplishment. They reminisced about their friendship with Smith becoming emotional at one point. At the very least, neither of these individuals is broke anymore, though the bond they seem to share trumps any price tag.

PokerRoad’s Gavin Smith Wins 1st WSOP Bracelet
Chalk one up for the common man. About 15 years ago, Canadian poker pro Gavin Smith was working as a cab driver in his hometown. Since then, figuratively speaking, Smith has been on a long and winding road enjoying some major peaks and valleys. To his credit, he has amassed over $5 million in poker tournament winnings, including 4 World Poker Tour final tables including an outright win at the 2005 Mirage Poker Showdown.
More recently, Smith has gained a new fan base as one of the co-hosts of PokerRoad Radio, along with Joe Sebok and Jeremiah Smith. Smith’s sharp wit and sense of humor, along with his natural candor has made him quite the fan favorite. Many regard Smith as almost a people’s champion type of person as he looks and sounds just like any of us.
Yesterday, Smith has finally reached the pinnacle of his poker playing career as he captured the one crown that had eluded him for so long. After a long journey, which had included nothing but disappointment at every World Series of Poker he has participated in, which included two separate 2nd place finishes, Smith won the $2,500 Mixed Hold em event for a $268K win, and more importantly, his first WSOP bracelet at the 2010 WSOP. The always affable Smith was gracious in his moment of triumph when reached for his comments shortly after his win was complete.
Of the accomplishment, he said,
"I always thought I was going to come back and I always thought I was going to win…This year, I thought I’m gonna try my best and you know what, I kept coming in and getting my teeth kicked in. I wasn’t seeing the results, then the last three days, everything’s just clicked and I felt like I played really well, I ran really well and it felt really special…The bracelet doesn’t really change anything. I’m going to come back tomorrow the same guy. It’s just now I’m part of that club I’ve always wanted to be a part of…I’m an old guy from Ontario who used to drive taxis – now I’m sitting here with hundreds of people coming out to watch me play poker while I win $200,000…There’s nothing in my life that can be considered a curse….every single minute of it is a blessing."
Shortly after the win, as expected, Smith participated in the latest recording of PokerRoad in what amounted as an hour-long victory party as well-wishers turned out to congratulate the humble Smith. With the Main Event approaching, and the proverbial monkey off his back, Smith is now primed for a deep run and the accolades he waited so long to earn.
