As a result of a legal decision, online casinos are now closing their doors to South African customers. Yesterday, Silver Sands Online Casino announced that they will not allow South African citizens to gamble on their website. Though South African customers can no longer play any games on Silver Sands Online Casino, management stresses that the players accounts “will remain accessible” and the players “may request a withdrawal” at any time. A similar statement was released by Piggs Peak, who is still legally operating their brick and mortar casino in the nation.

All of this stems from an August 20 ruling by the North Gauteng High Court that it is illegal to gamble online in the country, a decision that has been praised by the Gauteng Gambling Board but is being appealed by Piggs Peak.

By sheer coincidence, outlawing online gambling in South Africa would eliminate the only competition for the GGB, who runs all gambling operations in the nation. I’m sure that had nothing to do with the ruling, though.

A recent press released, issued by Blanca Games Inc., has shown the online poker world that the Cereus poker network has been sold. Tokwiro Enterprises has relinquished control of all Cereus Poker Network assets to the new company.

The CEREUS poker network consists of Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, two of the largest online poker rooms available. Tokwiro had encountered scandals with both of these online poker rooms in the past, and ultimately paid restitution in order to retain licensing and satisfy the affected players.

Ultimate Bet, established in 2001, had long been one of the largest online poker rooms. With live events, such as the Aruba Poker Classic, as well as endorsements from Phil Hellmuth, 11 time WSOP winner, Ultimate Bet had become a successful enterprise.

Absolute Poker was the younger of the two online poker rooms that comprise the Cereus Poker Network. Established in 2003, Absolute Poker was the first of the major cheating scandals to hit this poker network when a player named “POTRIPPER” managed to swindle players out of over $1 million in winnings.

Blanca Games’ CEO, Stuart Gorden, has stated that they “intend to leverage the existing strengths of the Cereus Poker Network, particularly in the areas of security and customer service.”

Fans hope that AP and UB will in fact receive the much needed improvements on these two USA online poker rooms that had once given USA online gambling a bad name.

It is likely that Blanca Games will prevent any future scandals from occurring.

Sportech CEO Ian Penrose has announced an agreement with the UK online and land betting group Ladbrokes, which will distribute its pool products through the internet to the Ladbrokes’ database. Penrose noted that the deal could be the forerunner of others as Sportech seeks to increase player liquidity, hoping to close at least another two agreements before the end of 2010.

“We are looking to increase our liquidity and there are two ways we can do that, either with a B2C strategy or by selling-on our white labelled football products for a set commission and a share of revenues,” he said, adding that such deals would add value to online gambling operations.

Penrose was commenting in a statment on the company’s first half 2010 financial results, in which Sportech reported a drop in adjusted profit before tax, down from £6.9 million in 2009 H1 to £5.8 million for the first half of 2010.

The group succeeded in raising £29.2 million in equity funding and reduced net bank debt by 35% to £51.7 million over the period.

The statement advised that “above average” visitor numbers had been recorded in the past two months of its Indian online operations, with 45,000 people registering to play. Sportech is involved in the region in a joint sports betting venture with Indian operator PlayWin in which the partners each invested £2 million.
